Overview

WAPO Chlor is WAPOTECH's on-site chlorine generation line. According to wapotech.com, the units provide an on-demand supply of 0.6 percent sodium hypochlorite solution generated from diluted brine through electrolysis, for swimming pools, spas, cooling towers or cleaning-in-place applications. WAPOTEC's Austrian site adds that the solution produced is below the 1 percent hazardous threshold, so the operator is not storing classified hazardous chlorine chemicals on site; only salt, water and electricity are consumed.

Two series are published. The Compact series is described as the latest, pre-assembled plug-and-play series for outdoor pools and large municipal indoor pools, with low maintenance and optional remote monitoring. The PRO series is offered for larger or customized installations. Both are pre-installed at the factory and sized to the facility's chlorine demand; WAPOTEC states that hypochlorite from one unit can serve multiple pools or other applications at the same time and that a complete unit for a typical 25 m indoor pool fits on a footprint of less than 1 square meter.

Published capacity ranges differ slightly between pages (30 to 8,500 g/h on wapotech.com and the WAPO Chlor page; 30 to 8,600 g/h and 60 to 8,500 g/h on the Electrolysis page). Telemetry options allow 1-way or 2-way remote communication over BUS, Ethernet or GSM. The electrolytic cell carries a 5-year pro-rata warranty per the manufacturer. WAPOTECH also states it supplies its own Pursalt electrolysis salt in granular and tablet form, and that rental, leasing and financing options are available.

Is this a fit for your facility?

Usually a fit when

  • Facilities that want to stop receiving and storing bulk liquid chlorine or calcium hypochlorite
  • Multi-pool sites, since one unit can feed several pools or other applications (manufacturer statement)
  • Operators who want remote monitoring of chlorine production through telemetry

Look elsewhere when

  • Sites without space or utilities for a brine tank, salt storage and electrical supply for the cell

Ideal facilities and conditions: Municipal indoor and outdoor pools; Hotel and resort pools and spas; Cooling towers and cleaning-in-place disinfection; Sites replacing delivered hypochlorite.

Key capabilities and benefits

Capabilities

  • Produces 0.6% sodium hypochlorite on demand from diluted brine by electrolysis (source: wapotech.com)
  • Capacity range from about 30 g/h to 8,500 g/h chlorine equivalent, single or multiple pool applications (source: wapotech.com; wapotec.com)
  • Compact and PRO series, factory pre-installed and sized to facility chlorine demand (source: wapotec.com)
  • Telemetry options for 1-way or 2-way remote communication via BUS, Ethernet or GSM (source: wapotec.com)
  • Electrolytic cell covered by a 5-year pro-rata warranty (source: wapotec.com)
  • Produced solution is below the 1% hazardous threshold (source: wapotec.com)

Operational and buyer benefits

  • WAPOTEC states operating cost savings of up to 70% compared with commercially produced hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite or chlorine gas
  • WAPOTEC states production is virtually pH-neutral, reducing acid demand and acid handling
  • WAPOTECH states no storage of hazardous chemicals is required and that rental options are available

Installation requirements and retrofit considerations

Prerequisites

  • Electrical supply for the electrolysis unit
  • Softened water and electrolysis-grade salt supply
  • Space for brine/salt storage and the unit (under 1 m2 stated for a 25 m pool unit)
  • Chemical feed and control system to dose the produced hypochlorite

Retrofit and replacement notes

  • Manufacturer states investment and installation costs are low and that units are pre-assembled plug-and-play
  • Existing hypochlorite feed pumps and controllers are not addressed on the site; confirm compatibility with the manufacturer

Integration with other equipment
