UV and Supplemental Treatment

Supplemental treatment sits beside chlorine, not in place of it. Ultraviolet systems break down combined chlorine (chloramines) and add a secondary disinfection barrier. Ozone and hydroxyl-based Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) systems are different technologies that can serve a similar secondary-disinfection role; AOP is not UV and should not be described as one. These technologies are common answers to natatorium air-quality complaints and to the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code's secondary-disinfection recommendations for high-risk venues. A further approach, the WAPOTEC SYSTEM from WAPOTECH, is chemical rather than a device: low-dose flocculation and oxidation aids dosed alongside chlorine to improve particle removal at the filter and support oxidation of bather-introduced contaminants.

FreyTech evaluates supplemental treatment in the context of the whole system: bather load, air handling, chemistry control, and, where the technology supports it, the controller's ability to monitor or control the unit.

Selection considerations

What to decide before choosing equipment

UV, ozone, AOP, or treatment chemistry

These are different approaches, not interchangeable terms. UV, ozone and AOP are devices on the recirculation loop; the WAPOTEC SYSTEM is dosed chemistry. Confirm which one is actually being specified or evaluated before comparing products.

Flow and dose

UV units are sized to design flow and target dose; AOP systems are sized by recirculation flow (GPM). The engineer confirms the loop position.

Lamp technology and maintenance

For UV, medium- versus low-pressure lamps differ in dose, energy, and replacement cycles; AOP systems have their own manufacturer-specified maintenance, such as an annual cartridge change.

Controls integration

BECSys5 offers optional UV (combined-chlorine) control; confirm interface with the specific unit, including whether it applies to non-UV technologies such as AOP.

Automated Controls

An automated controller is the decision-maker in the equipment room.

Filtration

Filtration removes the particles that chemistry cannot.

Pumps, Circulation and Flow Control

Circulation is the heartbeat of the equipment room: the recirculation pump moves water through filtration, treatment, and heating at the turnover rate the code requires.
