Filtration

Filtration removes the particles that chemistry cannot. Clarity, water use, and the size of the mechanical room all follow from the filter type chosen. Sand filters are simple and common; regenerative media filters trade a more involved operating routine for very fine filtration, smaller footprint, and far less backwash water.

FreyTech has supplied and installed Defender regenerative media filters at New York facilities including Ithaca College's 50-meter pool and Fairport High School, and represents Filtrex regenerative media filters, Mer-Made commercial sand filter systems and strainers, and WAPOTECH deep-bed filters. Filtration changes are mechanical-room projects: they involve hydraulics, turnover requirements under New York code, plan approval, and coordination with controls.

Common facility applications

  • Competition and university natatoriums
  • School district pools replacing original sand filters
  • Municipal and community pools in renovation
  • Facilities pursuing water and energy reduction

Selection considerations

What to decide before choosing equipment

Turnover and flow

New York code sets turnover requirements by pool type; the filter must handle design flow with the engineer's sign-off.

Operating routine

Regenerative media filters need periodic media changes and a bump cycle; staff must be trained for them.

Water and energy

Quantify current backwash volume and heating loss before projecting savings.

Footprint and approvals

Filter changes typically require engineer-prepared plans and health-department approval (6-1.8).
