Overview

The Aurora 3800 Series is a back-pullout, single-stage end suction centrifugal pump line from Pentair's Aurora brand. Pentair's commercial pool page presents it alongside the 410 Series as engineered pumps for commercial pools, spas and water applications, available in horizontal and vertical configurations with horsepower ratings to 150 and flows to 8,000 GPM across the combined offering. The pool brochure rates the 3800 Series itself at capacities to 4,200 GPM, heads to 520 feet and temperatures to 300 F.

Two models are offered: 3801, a close-coupled pump on a JM/JP motor, and 3804, a flexible-coupled pump mounted with its motor on a formed steel base and driven through a cast iron power frame with regreaseable bearings. Standard construction per the pool brochure is stainless fitted: ASTM A48 cast iron casing and seal plate, 316 stainless steel impeller and shaft sleeve, and a mechanical seal with 303 stainless steel metal parts, Buna-N elastomers, ceramic seat and carbon washer. Four power frame sizes are used, 4-inch discharge and larger pumps have a double volute to reduce bearing loads, and flanged models carry gauge taps on suction and discharge.

Pentair's Aurora brand page states the series was recently redesigned to surpass U.S. Department of Energy efficiency standards and that NSF 372, NSF 50 or NSF 61 certification is available depending on application, listing commercial pools among the intended uses. The pool page notes ODP and TEFC motors in standard and premium efficiency, an epoxy coating option and compatibility with Pentair's AcuDrive XS variable frequency drive. Pentair directs sizing, pricing and availability inquiries to its factory (800-831-7133).

Is this a fit for your facility?

Usually a fit when

  • Commercial pools, spas and water applications needing an engineered end suction pump beyond the range of plastic or bronze pool pumps
  • Flooded-suction pump rooms (Pentair lists flooded suction application capability)
  • Projects specifying stainless-fitted construction, NSF-certified models or premium-efficiency ODP/TEFC motors
  • Retrofits where a close-coupled (3801) or frame-mounted (3804) layout must match the existing footprint

Look elsewhere when

  • Self-priming installations with the pump above water level: Pentair lists the 3800 Series for flooded suction applications
  • Small pools served by Pentair's own self-priming pool pumps with integral hair-and-lint strainers (the 3800 Series has no integral strainer)

Ideal facilities and conditions: Commercial pool and spa recirculation; Water features and other water applications; Building services, pressure boosting and chilled water (per Aurora brand page); Water treatment, industrial process and agriculture (per Aurora brand page).

Specifications are summarized from manufacturer literature and depend on configuration. Confirm current values with FreyTech before design.

Installation requirements and retrofit considerations

Prerequisites

  • Flooded suction (pump is not self-priming; Pentair lists flooded suction application capability)
  • Separate hair-and-lint strainer if required by code; none is integral
  • Factory sizing: Pentair asks that applications, sizing, pricing and availability go through its factory (800-831-7133)
  • Alignment per Hydraulic Institute standards after installation on the 3804 (engineering specification)

Retrofit and replacement notes

  • Pentair's dimension table flags certain sizes with 'Dimensions do not match Bell & Gossett', so verify footprint against the existing base before a like-for-like swap
  • 3804 frame-mounted design allows motor replacement without removing the pump end; 3801 close-coupled uses JM/JP motors

Integration with other equipment
