Overview

The WhisperFloXF VS Commercial Pump combines a 5 HP totally enclosed fan-cooled variable-speed induction motor with an integral drive, so no external VFD is needed. A single part number (022035) covers 208-230/277-460 V single-phase and 208-460 V three-phase supplies at 50/60 Hz. Pentair markets it as an economical motor/drive solution for HMAC (hotel, motel, apartment, condominium) and large residential installations, and states it meets commercial codes and agency requirements, with independent testing to UL 1081 and NSF 50 (also CSA C22.2 No. 108 per the product page).

Four programmable settings can be set anywhere from 300 to 3450 RPM (factory presets 1720, 2500, 3000 and 3450 RPM), and the pump can be run under external control through automation systems or relays. When connected to Pentair's inline 4-20 mA flowmeter for 3 in plumbing (P/N 97014-4203KIT) or a similar 4-20 mA flowmeter, with the External Control Wiring Kit (P/N 353129Z), the pump can hold constant flow. Pentair's brochure plots performance to roughly 280 GPM and 90 ft TDH at 3450 RPM.

The wet end is a back pull-out volute in 30 percent glass-filled polypropylene with a glass-filled PPO closed impeller, bronze impeller wear ring, ceramic/carbon seal with EPDM elastomers, and a Cam and Ramp clear polycarbonate lid over an HDPE strainer basket. Suction and discharge are 2.5 in unions adaptable to 3 in. Limits are 42 psi, 104 F water and 122 F ambient. Pentair lists a 2-year warranty on the product page and illustrates energy savings of 13,276 kWh versus 27,681 kWh per year for a traditional single-speed pump on a 30,000 gallon commercial pool (WEF 5.0, THP 5.0).

Is this a fit for your facility?

Usually a fit when

  • Hotel, motel, apartment and condominium pools and similar HMAC facilities (Pentair's stated target)
  • Sites with only single-phase power that want a 5 HP variable-speed pump
  • Facilities reducing flow during non-use hours while maintaining 24-hour filtration, subject to health department approval
  • Constant-flow control with a 4-20 mA flowmeter and Pentair's external control wiring kit

Look elsewhere when

  • Duties above 5 HP or beyond about 280 GPM (Pentair's curve limit at 3450 RPM)
  • Water above 104 F or ambient above 122 F

Installation requirements and retrofit considerations
